Cupping
Cupping has gained global attention in recent times — from Olympic athletes to celebrities on New York runways—for the distinctive circular marks it leaves behind. In Chinese medicine, it has long been used as a supportive therapy for circulation, muscular tension, and certain respiratory presentations.
At Valley Acupuncture I may include cupping alongside acupuncture treatment, but plenty of people enjoy cupping as a stand-alone option too!

Cupping involves the use of cups that create a gentle suction on the skin, achieved with a flame (for glass cups) or a hand pump (for plastic cups). The suction draws the skin and superficial muscle layers upward, either with stationary cups or by sliding them over the skin to cover a larger area. Many people describe it as a “backwards deep tissue massage”—instead of pressing down, the cups lift.

Benefits
Research suggests cupping may help:
-
Reduce muscle activity, contributing to pain relief
-
Support muscle relaxation by improving microcirculation and tissue repair.
-
Encourage healing through increased local tissue metabolism
-
Stimulate the lymphatic system to support fluid balance
-
Promote a sense of comfort and relaxation on a systemic level

People often seek cupping for:
-
Musculoskeletal pain: such as chronic lower back pain, neck tension, or fibromyalgia
-
Digestive concerns: including bloating, reflux and constipation
-
Respiratory conditions: such as coughs, asthma and the common cold

What to Expect
At your session, your practitioner will discuss your health history and goals before applying the cups. Most people find the sensation unusual at first, but quickly relaxing. The treatment is tailored to your comfort, and afterwards you may feel looser, lighter, and more at ease.

After-care:
After treatment, you may notice round marks where the cups were placed. These are not bruises, but a normal response that fades within a few days. Their colour and intensity can sometimes provide information about the underlying muscle condition. To support recovery, it’s best to keep the area warm and covered, and drink plenty of water afterwards.
