Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic health system that has developed over thousands of years. It includes acupuncture, tui na (Chinese massage and bodywork), gua sha, herbal medicine, and movement practices such as qi gong and tai chi. TCM offers a framework for understanding health and illness that looks at the body as an interconnected whole, where physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors all play a role.
At the heart of this approach is the principle of balance, often expressed through the concepts of yin and yang. When these forces are in harmony, the body is thought to function smoothly, with energy, resilience, and ease. When imbalances occur — whether through stress, diet, injury, or environment — discomfort, illness, or pain may arise.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the best-known therapies within Chinese medicine. It involves the gentle insertion of very fine, single-use needles at specific points on the body. These points are located along pathways known as channels (or meridians), which are understood in Chinese medicine to influence the circulation of blood, fluids, and qi (often translated as the body’s functional energy).
By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to restore balance, support the body’s natural processes, and encourage overall wellbeing. Many people seek acupuncture for a wide range of health concerns, from musculoskeletal tension to stress, sleep, and general vitality. Treatments are always tailored to the individual, taking into account not only symptoms but also the broader picture of health.
What People Commonly Seek Acupuncture For
Many people get acupuncture for support with a variety of health concerns. While every treatment is tailored to the individual, some of the more common areas include:

-
Optimising movement – supporting preparation, recovery, and performance in sport and physical activity.
-
Stress, sleep and emotional wellbeing - Nervous tension, low mood, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and general support for mental and emotional balance.
-
Women’s health - Menstrual cycle support, symptoms of menopause, fertility support, pregnancy-related care (such as nausea or pre-birth preparation).
-
Digestive health - Bloating, reflux, changes in bowel habits, and general digestive balance.
-
Respiratory health - Hay fever, sinus issues, coughs, and general support for respiratory comfort.
-
Circulation and fluid balance - Poor circulation, muscle cramps, fluid retention and related concerns.
